‘The opposite of addiction is connection’ believes Pranav Dhody, Founder, Mind Healers and the Head Therapist at The Yard – the flagship rehabilitation center by Mind Healers. Mind Healers, is a charitable trust that functions in the domain of research and rehabilitation for drugs and depression; offering rehabilitation services to drug addicts.
In the given role, Pranav offers counselling sessions for depression, addiction and other personality issues. However, he emphasises that more than being a therapist his primary objective is to become a friend and a confidant to the drug users at The Yard. Each day he endeavours towards giving the users, who are dubbed as programmers, a sense of belonging and help them connect with the brighter aspects of life and most importantly with self. Taking cues from his personal experiences as a former addict and now in recovery, he is driven by his spontaneous and untaught understanding and connection that he feels towards the programmers.
Abused and bullied in his boarding school, he was consumed by a low sense of belongingness and self-esteem. Led by the compulsion of trying to fit in, Pranav resorted to substance abuse at a tender age of 14. Slowly and unsuspectingly dragging himself into a downward spiral, Pranav eventually found himself immersed in deep, dark rabbit holes of euphoria and suffering. Reeling through his addictions, he barely made through his school and college.
Nonetheless, it is worth mentioning, despite his toxic patterns, Pranav is a graduate from GD Goenka World School and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Retail Management from University of Central Lancashire. He furthered his academics with an Advanced Diploma in Retail Management from Indian Retail School. However, he found his true calling at the rehabilitation center that helped him connect with and accept himself.
After 12 years of drug abuse; a series of fatal accidents and failed rehab tenures, Pranav found respite in DAIRRC and a friend in Dr. Yusuf Merchant. After three and half years of intense rehabilitation and superior reintegration program, Pranav bounced back. In the pursuit of aiding thousands like him, he started working as a trainee counsellor in DAIRRC. Following which, he was appointed as an additional representative of DAIRRC to The UN Economic Social Council in 2017 and 2018. Furthering his intent, he also associated with three rehabilitation centers in Delhi viz. Roar Wellness and Life Skills as Residential Counsellor and in Safe House as a Visiting Counsellor. Laying the foundation of Mind Healers was one of his greatest achievements and his latest feat entails the launch of Junkiestan Times – a monthly/weekly newsletter published by his trust.
Today, Pranav appreciates spending a lot of time with self and enjoys reading and listening to music. Last but not the least, Pranav has always been a gym enthusiast.
